INSCOM Vet Is Pence’s National Security Advisor

Vice President Mike Pence announced in late January that he had hired retired U.S. Army Colonel Andrea Thompson to be his national security advisor. Thompson served in various positions throughout her career, including as a commander of a U.S. Army Intelligence and Security Command (INSCOM) unit.

The White House announced on Jan. 25 that Pence had selected Thompson “as Deputy Assistant to the President and National Security Advisor to the Vice President.” The press release provides a summary of her background and career.

Thompson also served as the commander of the 902nd Military Intelligence Brigade. The 902nd is one of the major subordinate commands of INSCOM, which in turn “is an Army major command that conducts intelligence, security and information operations for military commanders and national decision makers.”

INSCOM was one of the units I served in and/or worked in support of during my time in the intelligence community. The average person likely has never heard of it, and there are even a surprising amount of soldiers who might not know what it is or what it does.

The latest officially produced video from INSCOM is available as a WMV file on its homepage and it shows the purpose of the unit in greater detail. But, if you don’t want to download and watch that, you can watch the below video from YouTube. It is an officially produced INSCOM video circa 2012.

INSCOM isn’t necessarily any more important than any other unit in Thompson’s career. But for those interested in national security matters, it is noteworthy that she served there.
