Islam and Allah

One of the things that has been emphasized since September 11, 2001 is that “Allah” is simply the Arabic word for “God.”

Those who have argued that “Allah” carries with it a particularly Islamic connotation have been subjected to ridicule and charges of ignorance or “Islamophobia.”

However, a recent Malaysian court ruling provides additional information on how people truly perceive the word “Allah.”

Reuters reported the following on October 14:
A Malaysian court ruled on Monday that a Christian newspaper may not use the word “Allah” to refer to God, a landmark decision on an issue that has fanned religious tension and raised questions over minority rights in the mainly Muslim country.
This won’t change the overall narrative in the Western world on the full meaning of “Allah,” but this ruling does provide additional insight into the fact that it carries with it more than just the Arabic word for “God.”
